Search Engine Optimisation – How It Works And The Importance Of It

Search Engine Optimisation (or SEO for short) is the process in which a webmaster tries to increase the visibility of a website or web page for search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Bing etc. SEO has become an important tool used by web designers to improve a websites position on a search engine. Improving the position of a website is clearly important as it should increase traffic to a website which would generate more sales or more people seeing the content on the website. There are two main techniques in which SEO is performed, the best way (in my opinion) would be the white hat method/organic SEO where a user would try to get to the top a search engine using user friendly and search engine friendly techniques. I will explain more about organic SEO, but the other method is black hat SEO which is spamming websites, keyword stuffing and using inappropriate ways to trick a search engine into forcing your way to the top.

Organic search engine optimisation is the best way to get your website noticed and keep it at the top. There are many factors to take into consideration when optimising a website such as content, links and selecting the right keyword. One of the most important factors in organic SEO would be fresh content. It would be pointless trying to copy someone else content on their website and try to pass it on as your own as most search engines will pick up on this and punish you for this. The best thing to do is create new and fresh content regularly using the correct keywords in the right places.

When it comes to creating fresh content there are a few things you should take into consideration if you would like a search engine to pick up on your blog and see it as relevant content. The first thing would be what people search for, if your blog is about motorcycle related products and you want to attract more customers for your own motorcycle products business then using the main keyword as motorcycle would be pointless. The reason for this is motorcycle gets search around 60,500 per month and the majority of people wont be wanting to buy motorcycle products but research motorcycles. Another reason that would be a poor keyword is because there is a lot of competition on the Internet for that keyword (79,700,000 results to be specific) so to narrow down the competition and improve your odds of getting people to view your blog and to buy your products you would need to use a more generic keyword to what your blog is about. If the certain blog you was writing about was motorcycle indicators then instead of using motorcycle as the main keyword, it would make more sense to make your main keyword motorcycle indicators. The reason for this is if someone is searching motorcycle indicators then they are more likely to be looking to buy some motorcycle indicators. Only 1000 people search motorcycle indicators per month but there are only 728,000 results when searched and those 1000 people are more likely to want a a pair of motorcycle indicators than the 60,500 searching motorcycle.

When you have distinguished a relevant keyword then you have to make sure you use it properly. The way to do this would be to make sure it is in the blogs title, body text, tag and keywords. There is a fine line between using keywords properly and spamming a blog with keywords and if you use keywords inappropriately then a search engine will think you are over using it and may not rank you as high. Another thing to take into consideration is can a person viewing the blog still understand it? If you over use the keyword in the blog then it may become difficult to read and potentially make a user look for another result, after all what is the point of being the top of all search engines if people don’t understand what you are trying to do. A lot of websites suggest a percentage of text that should be keywords and it does vary but the main suggestion is anywhere between 3-8% which includes the use of the keyword in the title tag, body etc.

Once you have written your blog using the main keyword as motorcycle indicators then you need to think how that blog is going to help promote your businesses website. If your businesses website is optimised for motorcycle accessories then linking the keyword in the blog to a page on your businesses website which is optimised for motorcycle indicators would be a good start. Using motorcycle indicators would be the perfect anchor text to link to your website IF it is optimised for that keyword. When it comes to anchor text, links and relevance all of a sudden keywords become a lot more important and can really influence a websites position on search engines.

Anchor text is the text that is linked from one website to another. For example instead of “please click here to be redirected to some motorcycle indicators” it would be a lot more beneficial for “If you are looking for a nice pair of motorcycle indicators then this website is brilliant” linking motorcycle indicators to your page which is optimised for it. The reason for this is a search engine would read motorcycle indicators and follow the link, it would then see your on page optimisation (keywords etc) and see that the link is relevant to the website. The link would be even more valuable if it is associated with motorcycle related website and it is a followed link to your website with the anchor text being motorcycle indicators. When all of these things are taken into consideration you start to see the bigger picture of how using the right keywords and anchor text for links can affect a websites SEP (search engine position).

This is just scratching the surface of Search Engine Optimisation and it becomes more diverse and confusing after the basics are out of the way. Now you know a little about Search Engine Optimisation you may want to learn more or consider using another company to perform SEO techniques.
